Dearest new mama: a glimpse into life with a newborn
By Shannon McLaughlin, Ubuntu Baba Founder
While doing some late night admin and cleaning up my computer, I found a file with some notes in it from when my son was really small. I don’t even remember writing half of the stuff in there, but this one was a pretty good reminder of what my life was like with a newborn baby in the house, as well as why I decided to design my own baby carrier. It brought back so many memories of how rough those days really were, and if you have a little one right now, I’m sure you’ll be able to relate.
I’ve always been in control of my life. My day was scheduled, I’d eat right, drink 2 litres of water, exercise, walk, catch up with friends, stay in touch with my family, put on some mascara, cuddle my cat, water my plants, blog, do some client work, pin some photographs of my future kitchen, and read my favourite book in the evening, maybe relax in the bath, and give myself a pedi.
But when my baby arrived, it was a total shock to the system. All of a sudden I was missing out on all of the above. I had this vision that I’d “get stuff done when the baby sleeps”. But unless you’re one of the very lucky ones, the baby doesn’t sleep unless he/she is literally ‘on you’… and if you’re not a mom yet, ask any mom what I’m talking about!
This means that once baby falls asleep, you are either stuck on the couch, or in bed, and don’t even think about making yourself a healthy salad. Your bladder somehow finds a way to do a full 360 after pregnancy, and you’ll be amazed how peeing twice a day becomes your new thing. I found myself lying in bed, with my baby on top of me, dying for a wee, exhausted and starving, yet the only thing I could do for fear of waking baby, was to reply to messages from well meaning friends saying “aaah yes, he is precious, we are all doing great, here’s a cute pic of us right now.”
Until… I discovered babywearing. A friend had gifted me a stretchy wrap, and at that point I would’ve tried anything to get my baby to stop crying and just go to sleep, so I gave it a go. It took me a good week of frustration and tripping over the ends of the wrap before I worked out how to use it properly, but when I did, my baby would sleep, with absolute ease.
But there were still days where I had tied it too tight or too loose before putting him in and I would land up in tears, a hot and hopeless mess. I wish there were a simpler way!
(I actually wrote this, with no idea back then that I would be making and selling baby carriers in the not too distant future!)
Why it's funny now, but not so funny then.
I won’t go on to share the rest of my ramblings with you, because I know there may be some pregnant mama’s reading this and I don’t want to scare you too much ;) but I’m so glad I can smile about those days now. Not that I remember them very clearly, but I do remember being in the thick of it all and thinking that THIS was it. My life was doomed. I would never leave the house again. I was a crappy Mom by anyone’s standards and my baby must hate me because why is he crying soooooo much!
Looking back now, I’m so grateful for that experience, because out of all that frustration, an idea was born. An idea to create a simple, breathable and comfortable carrier that could be used from the newborn days onwards, and allow new moms to ease into motherhood with confidence, freedom and style.
So if you’re in the thick of it all right now, just know that I’ve been there, I feel you, I see you, I high five you. You’re doing great, I promise you (even if you’re crying for 3 hours of the day, you just made another human – so crying is allowed).
What I’ve learnt from my experience is that parenthood is the start of a beautiful yet challenging journey, add babywearing… and it makes it a whole lot easier!
There is life after baby and your Ubuntu Baba baby carrier will help you get there.
From womb to world
After birth, your baby basically moves from the inside of your bump, to the outside of your bump, and that’s exactly where they want to stay!
You are literally thrown into the deep end when your baby arrives. Not only is it overwhelming for you, but your baby also has to come to terms with life outside the womb.
Towards the end of your pregnancy you always feel like you can’t wait to have your baby on the outside, but we’ve heard so many new Moms say that they’d give anything to put them back inside for just a few hours a day! It’s so much easier because you have two arms free and can still do what you want to do, when you want to do it. But as soon as your 4th trimester starts, it’s your baby who’s calling the shots!
Babywearing is a wonderfully natural way to help your new babe ease into the world with all its new sensory experiences, while still being able to feel and hear the familiar heartbeat that they’ve been so intimately involved with for the last 40 weeks. Besides keeping your baby calm, it will also help you ease into motherhood and enjoy all the benefits that babywearing has to offer.
Sleep deprivation. The struggle is real.
Time is one of the few things in this world that you can’t replace. When you’re having a rough time trying to balance baby and life, it’s very easy to wish yourself into the future, into a time when your baby doesn’t need you every second of the day. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Carried babies fall asleep quicker and sleep for longer periods of time during the day (which is essential during those first few months of life AND if they sleep better during the day, they sleep better during the night). You may have heard Ubuntu Baba moms talk about the ‘magical sleepy dust’, it’s a real thing!
Our Stage 1 carrier is designed to help mimic that hugging feeling of the womb which in turn gives your baby a feeling of security and helps to calm them instantly, so that our famous Ubuntu Baba sleepy dust can do it’s job!
